Working in the hospitality industry can be great for many reasons. If you’re new to the workforce or looking for something different, a hospitality job can be a great way to kick start a long term career.

Positions in hospitality range from entry level, full time to management. Often people just see hospitality as working behind a bar pouring beers. However, this is not the case.

Hospitality venues can range from; pubs, hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, cocktail bars, resorts and more. These venues require housekeeping staff, kitchen staff, gaming staff and bar staff to make them run efficiently. Which are all classed as hospitality jobs.

Furthermore, choosing a hospitality career path can open the door to many opportunities. You can start as a dishy in the kitchen and work your way up to Head Chef. Or you could start as a glassy and end up as Venue Manager. The opportunities are endless.

Entry Level

The hospitality industry is great for school students, school leavers and entry-level job seekers. As well as anyone else interested in working within the industry. There are many pathways and short courses available to help you get your foot in the door. Plus, the industry often hires younger employees as their wait staff and dishys. Which may seem like the easier jobs (not necessarily), but they are a great step towards a future career in hospitality.

Social Interaction

Working in hospitality gives you the opportunity to meet and talk to new people everyday. From talking to new customers, old customers and every day regulars. You will meet people from all walks of life and some may even become long term friends.

As a hospitality worker, you’re able to make someone’s day with something as simple as asking how they are, or even remembering what a certain customer drinks. Which is a rewarding feeling.

Furthermore, if you love meeting and interacting with people, a hospitality career could be just for you.

Career growth

You may be presented with the opportunity to grow your hospitality career and step up into a bigger position. This may be from a dishy to kitchen hand or a bartender to duty manager. These opportunities can be offered to you for your hard work. Or you can undertake extra training outside of work to help get you there – maybe a Basic Gaming Course for example?

Work available anywhere

Working in hospitality will allow you to work almost anywhere. Overseas or interstate, if there’s a pub, resort or restaurant, you will be able to find a job.

In addition, there are always hospitality jobs available in tourist towns during their peak seasons. For example, towns in Australia with ski resorts will often hire hundreds of hospitality employees during the snow season. This is also the case for Canada’s snow season.

Hospitality work is great for people who want to work, earn and travel all at the same time.

Flexibility

Working 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday not your thing? Maybe rotating shifts from weekdays to weekends might be a better fit for your schedule. You can often work around personal commitments such as; study, sport, Uni or kids. Within reason of course. Working in hospitality is popular within all age groups. But most commonly, Uni students due to the flexibility.

Getting into your dream job may seem difficult, however, there are plenty of job pathways you can take to get there. From pre apprenticeships, traineeships and apprenticeships. Depending on what industry you want to get into, there will more than likely be some sort of pathway to help get you there.

In addition, apprenticeships and traineeships are a great way to get your foot in the door for your preferred field of work. These job pathways provide you with structured course training as well as real work-life experience. Which is great! Plus, pre apprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships don’t require any prior qualification. So, if you’re fresh out of school or even in school, you can kick start your career with a job pathway!

But what exactly are these job pathways and how do you get one?

What’s the difference between a pre apprenticeship, apprenticeship and traineeship?

All 3 job pathways help you to achieve the same thing – attain your dream job (hopefully). However, they do all differ in time, requirements and qualification outcomes.

Here is some individual info on all 3:

Pre Apprenticeship

Pre apprenticeships are completed prior to completing an apprenticeship and usually take 6-12 months. They aren’t a requirement of getting an apprenticeship, but they do help you get that step closer to getting one.

Pre apprentice training is entry level and made up of classroom learning and hands-on work experience. This type of pathway is usually offered through level 1 and level 2 qualifications.

The outcome of completing a pre apprenticeship would be a level 1 or 2 qualification. As well as possible employment under an apprenticeship agreement.

Furthermore, this is also a great way to make sure that field of work is what you’re wanting to do. Rather than going straight into a 3-4 year apprenticeship.

Traineeships

Traineeships are a great way to gain a qualification in your chosen field of work (if available). A traineeship will provide you with hands-on learning in the workplace, as well as in classroom learning through an RTO, such as HITsa

Traineeships can be completed either full-time or part-time. Often, students will choose to complete a school-based traineeship when in year 10, 11 or 12. As a school-based trainee, you will gain your qualification within 1-2 years. Depending on your certificate level undertaken and how much you commit to study.

Traineeships are great for high school students, school leavers or those looking for a career change.

Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a job pathway that combines paid on the job training and in classroom learning with an RTO. It’s a great way to gain a nationally recognised qualification related to your field of work.

Apprenticeships will generally take 3-4 years to complete and can be completed full time, part time or school based. They are great for entry level job seekers, students, school leavers or people wanting a career change.

As an apprentice, you can gain a qualification ranging from a certificate 2 to an advanced diploma across a range of fields. Which could include trades, cookery, hospitality, admin and more.

Furthermore, anyone of working age can be hired as an apprentice.

Interested in a job pathway?

Undertaking a pre apprenticeship, traineeship or apprenticeship is a great way to get your foot in the door to your preferred field of work. All 3 job pathways provide you with a combination of practical on the job experience and in classroom learning.

In addition, these job pathways are a great way to gain a qualification ranging from a certificate 1 to an advanced diploma. Depending on what field of work you’re in and the job pathway you take.

Job pathways are great for entry level job seekers, school students and year 12 graduates. As well as people seeking a career change or wanting to gain new skills.

Furthermore, HITsa offer a range of job pathways in hospitality and administration. You can view these online or call the friendly team on 8375 2800 for more information.

So, you’re a Uni Student and need to support yourself financially whilst studying? Juggling work-life and study can sometimes be difficult. But finding a job that lets you juggle the both can be even more difficult – if you make it.

As a Uni Student, your weekdays are probably filled with study and attending classes. Leaving you with weekends and weeknights to earn some cash. However, if you’re lucky and have a good study schedule, you may have some weekdays to spare.

What are the most suitable jobs for Uni students though? To help you out, we’ve collated some information on the most suitable jobs. As well as some tips on how to get those jobs. Read on to find out!

Barista

Most (not all) people these days rely on coffee to get them through their workday. Therefore, baristas are well sought after. Barista jobs are often casual, which is exactly what you need as a Uni student. Although this isn’t always the case.

If you have previous experience in a cafe or you’re already equipped with coffee making skills. Getting a job as a barista should be an easy task. However, if you don’t already have the skills, it’s not difficult to learn them. HITsa offer a 3 day Barista Course that will provide you with the skills to prepare and serve espresso coffee. Once completed, you should be able to find a barista job in no time!

Furthermore, barista work is a suitable job for Uni students.

Bar Staff

Working behind a bar can be a great job for Uni students, that’s if you’re able to stay up late and you’re potentially willing to give up your weekends. Bar work is convenient for students as it’s mainly night shifts and weekend work. Leaving your weekdays free to attend Uni.

However, if you value your weekends and aren’t willing to sacrifice them to support yourself financially, bar work may not be for you. Unless you find an employer who’s happy to roster you on weeknights only.

Furthermore, if you’re wanting to work in a bar you’re going to need to get your RSA. RSA training is a 1-day course that provides you with the legal requirements to work within the sale or supply of alcohol.

HITsa offer this hospitality training online or in-classroom – enrol online today!

Gaming Staff

Working in a gaming room is again another great job for Uni students. As gaming rooms are often open 7 days a week and until late, it’s quite easy to make room for shifts in your busy Uni schedule.

However, to work within a gaming room you will need to get your gaming badges. Don’t stress though, these are easy enough to get! And once you have them, it shouldn’t take long to land yourself a job.

Start by undertaking a Basic Gaming Course and then complete your Advanced Gaming to take it to the next level.

Wait Staff

If you don’t have time or you’re not interested in working late nights, working as a waitress/waiter could be a better option. Wait staff will often get to finish much earlier than bar or gaming staff as most kitchens are only open until 9/10pm. Therefore, you can still manage to juggle work-life and social events on weekends. With your weekdays dedicated to Uni and study.

Completing a Food & Beverage Service course is a great way to get into the hospitality industry.

Uni Students… it’s time to get a job!

Now that you know the best jobs for Uni students – it’s time to go out and get one! Whether you’re wanting to work as a barista or maybe bar work is more you’re thing.
