Student Spotlight

Meet Natasha, an Individual Support student at HITsa Salisbury, who encountered a real life situation that put her practical skills to use.

“On New Years day I visited my local swimming centre for a day out. As the afternoon wore on, an alarming incident unfolded. I had just stepped out of the pool to grab a drink and chat with a friend when I heard frantic shouts; “someone’s under the water!” and a bystander yelled “it’s not a joke!”. In that split second, I scanned the scene for the lifeguards only to realise they were on the opposite side of the pool, far from the emergency. Without hesitating, I made the decision to act.

I sprinted toward the individual being pulled from the water by teens. Arriving just as they were laid on the ground. It was clear they were unresponsive. Drawing on my recent training, I immediately began chest compressions. Thankfully, after just a few moments, they started to respond and coughed up water. Life guards were there to take over and we were able to place the person in the recovery position and we provided comfort and oxygen until the ambulance arrived.

I truly believe that if I hadn’t completed my First Aid training, I wouldn’t have had the confidence or courage to step up in such a critical moment. Every second counts in emergencies, and I can assure you that I didn’t hesitate for even a moment. I leapt into action, driven by instinct and a sense of responsibility. Natasha
