Basic Skills for Retail

HITsa offers a number of introductory skills courses such as Basic Skills for Retail. During the Basic Skills for Retail course students will study units including Engage the customer, Work effectively in a service environment, Communicate in the workplace to support team and customer outcomes, Balance and secure point-of-sale terminal, Sell to the retail customer and Produce visual merchandise displays.

The unit ‘Produce visual merchandise displays’ is a very hands-on experience for the students and allows those with a creative flair to put their skills to the test. They are required to set up three different displays, including a festive one. Below are some pictures of the visual merchandise displays that were created by our recent class. Scott the trainer (who was happy to be the model for the festive display) encouraged the students to be creative while also creating some professional looking displays using items found around the Salisbury site.

Hands-on short courses at HITsa

A big shout-out to the students who recently completed Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control at our Salisbury site!

This nationally recognised unit was delivered as part of ongoing training in the Certificate III in Individual Support and the Preparing to Work in Community Services and Health Skill Set - two great pathways into care and support roles.

Students got hands-on with real-world infection control procedures, from proper hand hygiene and PPE use to preventing the spread of infection - all essential skills in health and community settings.

For those who are considering a career in care, the Preparing to Work in Community Services and Health Skill Set is a great way to get started. It covers core areas like communication, diversity, safe work practices and infection control  - and can open doors to further study or entry-level work.

Our Mount Gambier Hospitality Students Train at Acclaimed Local Restaurant

Hospitality trainer Kirby recently gave students a hands-on experience at his award-winning restaurant, Elementary by Soul.

Students explored key aspects of front-of-house operations — including POS systems, guest greetings, and delivering customer service excellence. They also completed an introductory espresso course, learning to prepare and serve quality coffee.

Kirby’s real-world training approach equips students with the confidence and skills for a successful hospitality career.

It’s about a lot more than how to make Espresso.

At the recent Murraylands Jobs, Skills and Career Showcase, Business Manager Jo had the opportunity to catch up with some of our previous project partners. It was especially great to catch up with the team from Headspace Murray Bridge, who we worked with earlier in the year to bring together a bespoke espresso program. It is well known that the benefits of training often extend past the expected learning outcomes of a simple unit of competency. Jo was told about how, in addition to having a great time, and gaining confidence in their own skills, a number of participants have transitioned into employment. Having completed SITXFSA005 – Use hygienic practices for food safety meant they had transferrable skills, required by employers which has opened doors to new opportunities.

The team mentioned how much fun their clients had doing the training with HITsa – we look forward to working with them again soon and encourage anyone looking to run a similar program to contact us to put together a proposal.

Dot’s Placement Update

Just a few weeks ago, Dot was eagerly counting down the days until placement began. Now, she’s fully immersed in Early Childhood Education and thriving in the experience!

When asked what she enjoys most about placement, Dot shared:

“Something I really like and am enjoying about placement is building relationships with the children and watching them reach their developmental milestones as they grow and develop.”

It hasn’t all been what she expected though—Dot admits there’s a lot more paperwork than she first thought! But with the support of the educators at her centre, she’s found a wealth of knowledge and guidance to help her grow in confidence and skills.

From the classroom to the playground, Dot is embracing every opportunity to put her learning into practice. We can’t wait to see how her journey continues as she shapes her future as an Early Childhood Educator.

Exploring the Beauty of Sri Lanka: Colombo, Kandy and Mirissa Olly's Adventure

With 10 days to spare and a fantastic travel agent who knows how much I hate sitting airports - Sri Lanka popped up on our radar as a warm, lush getaway and so we booked!

Sri Lanka was nothing short of unforgettable, taking me from the bustling streets of Colombo to the cultural heart of Kandy, and finally to the serene beaches of Mirissa.

In Colombo, I was immediately struck by the city’s vibrant energy—a blend of colonial charm, modern skyscrapers, and colourful markets. We only had a short stop but we took on a city Tuk Tuk tour which if you lack nerves of steel you might want to pass on. The markets were fantastic packed with people, food and pretty well anything (including the kitchen sink).

Next, I headed inland to Kandy, a city surrounded by lush hills and steeped in tradition. The highlight was visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites. The city’s tranquil lake and botanical gardens added to the sense of peace, making Kandy a place where culture and nature meet beautifully. Our house was perched up in the hills and apart from the squirrels and the monkeys ( I do not like monkeys!) it was exceptional!

To end the trip, I journeyed south to Mirissa, where golden beaches and turquoise waters welcomed me. Here, life slowed down—whether it was enjoying fresh seafood, watching the sunset over the Indian Ocean, or simply relaxing by the waves. Mirissa’s laid-back charm was the perfect finale to my travels.

Breakfast was provided every morning and it was overwhelming (check it out below) and happy to report that there was no lunch required - everything was so fresh and cooked by the small team each morning so we ate far too much.

Luckily one of our trainers is from Sri Lanka so Oshie gave me some tips on what were the must trys - crab curry, hoppers and kottu (yes I tried them all) - now I need to find a Sri Lankan restaurant in Adelaide!

So in closing if you have not been and have the opportunity to travel chuck it on your list -

  • the weather is fantastic
  • the people are warm and welcoming and very keen to chat and find out where you are from
  • you feel safe
  • bus drivers are crazy (be careful)
  • food is delicious and cheap
Just another perfect sunset!

Change of Legal Name - Reissue of Certificate

It is becoming a more commonplace occurrence that people are changing their names not only due to marriage and divorce but also increasingly as a result of how they identify as a person.

This increase in name changes has a flow on effect with past students wanting their certificate reissued in their new legal name.

The first step for any student is to have the Unique Student Identifier (USI) updated.

Once the USI registry is updated, we require verification of the student’s identity along with evidence of the name change (New Birth Certificate/Change of Name Certificate) supplied and recorded before any records can be updated in our system.

Upon all information being updated and verified we can then reissue the certificate in the new legal name.

COMPLIANCE NEWS

With the release of the new RTO Standards in July 2025, HITsa has been embracing fresh opportunities to strengthen the way we work and deliver training.

Behind the scenes, our team has been working hard to not only meet but exceed expectations in key areas of focus:

We’re excited to welcome our new Continuous Improvement Manager, who is leading the way in keeping us on track and ensuring our standards remain high. Together, we are developing and sharing new policies, bringing fresh ideas to life, and embracing technology to make learning more engaging and accessible.

At HITsa, the changes are more than compliance — they’re about creating a better experience for our learners, industry partners and staff.
