Celebrating Milestones at HITsa Mount Gambier
This month, HITsa Mount Gambier celebrated not just one, but seven major milestones!
We proudly held our very first qualification graduation, marking an exciting new chapter for our site.
Jema became our first-ever graduate, successfully completing her Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing).
Also celebrating their achievements were:
- Keith, Nicole and Jaenver, who completed their Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)
- Yasmin, Dot and Emma, our first graduates in Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care
- Gavin, our first graduate in Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability)
Adding to the celebrations, Gavin also marked a personal milestone, celebrating his 18th birthday whilst undergoing placement. His placement manager described him as “an absolute legend”, and the team made sure the occasion was celebrated in style — with a big cake and a full staff sing-along.
Congratulations to all our graduates on their outstanding accomplishments. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to your studies make us incredibly proud. We look forward to seeing what you accomplish next as you continue your professional journeys.
Here’s to many more successes ahead for our Mount Gambier students and community.

Prepare and SERVE Espresso Coffee
You may not be aware, but as part of the Prepare and Service Espresso Coffee course that we run, participants are required to approach staff and other students to take their coffee orders. The students then prepare the coffee and serve it to their customers. The customers provide written feedback to the students about their coffee. Some of the feedback received from the most recent class includes:
“Beautiful coffee, lovely manners; spot on both times”
“It was very very yum”
“Delicious, Danny was very kind and careful. The foam was amazing, perfect amount!”
“Just perfect! Thanks”
“Nice flavour. Good coffee.”
“Not too strong; high lift on the froth; loved it”
“Presentation looks amazing”
“Good presentation and taste very good. Good job. Well done.”
Receiving encouragement and feedback is an important part of preparing and serving coffee as the students get immediate information that they can use to improve their barista skills. The feedback also allows the trainer to evaluate and, if necessary, adapt or change strategies to ensure they are meeting the learning needs of their students.

Paul’s Story: Starting a New Career in Disability Support
My experience with HITsa (Salisbury) started after I decided a career change would be beneficial to me.
I have spent much of my adult life in a manufacturing/factory setting. Mainly in the bedding industry both here in Australia and back in Scotland where I am from. Learning by being hands-on from the starter jobs through to my last job as production manager. Part of my role was to train people how to do various jobs within the industry. I quickly discovered one form of training doesn't suit all, so I would have to adapt my teaching methods to become clear. I also spent time with elderly and disabled customers talking through their needs and designing beds specifically to those needs. Once I had made and delivered to these customers their genuine “thank you’s” was like receiving a non-monetary bonus that stayed with me for a long time. I saw they really appreciated being listened to. Hence, when I thought about a career change, I thought about exploring support roles.
After doing some homework I found HITsa would be a better fit for me than the bigger college’s as I haven’t studied in a class environment since high school 41yrs ago. I decided to take Cert 3 in Disability Support. I had between 12 and 15 classmates from school leavers through to myself at 58yrs old. We had a relaxed atmosphere embraced by the trainers who also added to that relaxed feeling. I had 4 or 5 trainers during my course, all with different approaches. At the time I preferred some approaches to others but on reflection now that I have completed my placement that diversity prepared me to fit in with the various support workers I now work alongside.
HITsa organised my placement of 120hrs with Campability. Both Amanda and Jeanette claimed, “they hand-picked me as I would suit Campability”. At the time I thought “they’re just saying that”. After completing 40hrs of my placement I was offered a permanent position with Campability. So maybe I misjudged them (sorry guys).
The team at HITsa which I had contact with included Amanda, Jeanette, Renee, Oshine and Pam were all very welcoming. All know their job. All responded well to questions, and I know if I have any questions in the future they won’t hesitate to answer them.
If you are thinking of following my path I wouldn’t think twice about saying go with HITsa, well worth it.
I’ll end this by saying Cindy is like the cog of HITsa she connects everyone. She doesn’t need oil but she does like muffins.
Locally run short courses that get local jobs
HITsa Mt Barker always have a range of short courses on offer, and it is local training that changes outlooks, and leads to local jobs.
In early October we ran a prepare and serve coffee course at HITsa Mt Barker. One of our participants, Narelle*, enjoyed herself so much that, by the end of the first day she was excitedly looking into the logistics of buying her own coffee van. HITsa’s barista course is run over three consecutive days, with small class sizes, providing an ideal opportunity for participants to connect with one another. Not only did Narelle learn a new skillset, that she can leverage into an income, she also met, and became friends with Judy* who was in the same class. Narelle is now excited to go into business with her coffee van, and she has found her first employee – Judy, who is keen to pick up some casual weekend work.
Are you considering working in hospitality? Then you will probably want to also consider training in food safety and responsible service of alcohol. HITsa is happy to help you start your new career.

Congratulations to Adam
Adam C enrolled to undertake Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) at our Clarence Gardens site early June 2025.
He was a student that all training organisations dream of. He was always early, cheerful, completed his online activities on time along with his assessments.
On completion of his classroom learning, Adam wanted to announce an end to his course in a bold way by ringing our reception bell for all to hear. We told him it was his to ring once he completed his work placement and handed in his work placement logbook.
Adam completed his work placement, successfully gained his certificate this month and got to ring the bell (see photo below).
In Adam's words
"My time at HITsa has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional journey. Every trainer I worked with brought their own unique strengths, experience, and warmth into the classroom, creating an environment that truly reflected the heart of aged care. What stood out most to me was how willing each trainer was to share real stories from the field, answer every question with patience, and help us understand not just what we do, but why we do it.
Jasleen, in particular, made a lasting impression. Her ability to blend her own experiences with listening to our experiences and feedback created a mutual learning environment that kept every class meaningful and engaging.
Once I began my placement, I quickly realised how much of what I’d learned in class directly applied to real world care. The knowledge, skills, and confidence I gained through HITsa have helped prepare me for a meaningful career in aged care; one where compassion and professionalism go hand in hand."
Congratulations Adam and we wish you all the best for your future.

Road Trip to Mt Gambier
Hello and and Goodbye to October...... Where are the days and months going!
HITsa's EO, Head of Wellbeing and Lead Trainer took a road trip to the Limestone Coast during October and catch up with the team in Mount Gambier...
The car was loaded with Robel, Renee, resources and beanbags, with Olly at the helm, we hit the road on a Tuesday morning - destination Percy Street Mt Gambier.
We spent time introducing our wellbeing services and Robel to our students on site as well as catching with our Business Manager Carolyn and our wonderful trainers.
Recent addition to our training team is talented local chef, Kirby who is now on deck training all things hospitality, coffee, cookery and retail as well as balancing his passion Elementary by Soul, his restaurant paying homage to seasonality based on Bungandidj land with a down-to-earth, uncomplicated approach in food and drink experiences.
So its seemed only fitting to sit down and sample the tasting menu which included ......

and a half eaten Roasted sweet potato, pumpkin & gochujang steamed bun
