Finishing school and deciding what to do can be daunting. But it doesn’t have to be! There are many great career pathways for school leavers, including traineeships and apprenticeships.

Could a traineeship or apprenticeship be right for you? Read on to find out what options are available to you as a school leaver.

Traineeships & Apprenticeships

There are many great reasons why an apprenticeship or traineeship should be on your radar as a school leaver. They provide you with hands-on industry experience in the workplace, as well as in classroom learning through an RTO, such as HITsa.

There are also many other reasons why you may consider a traineeship or apprenticeship.

Try before you buy

Studying a degree at Uni doesn’t give you the opportunity to see what it’s like to work in that industry. Meaning you could potentially find yourself in the wrong field and with a significant HECS debt.

With a traineeship or apprenticeship, you are learning on the job and getting hands on experience in your chosen industry from the very beginning. Which gives you a fair idea on whether that field of work is for you or not – and you won’t be left with a HECS debt if you decide that it’s not for you.

Earn while you learn

Unlike many other post school options, where you will most likely be balancing study and a casual job, trainees and apprentices earn while they learn. You will be learning on the job skills while earning a salary and working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

As a trainee or apprentice, you get to work alongside industry leaders and equip yourself with a range of practical skills – giving you a real career advantage.

Training is flexible

Apprenticeships and traineeships offer great flexibility as they can be completed full time or part time. Apprenticeships generally take between 3 – 4 years to complete, while traineeships can be completed within 6 – 18 months.

Networking

When it comes to job hunting, they say it’s who you know that helps. By pursuing an apprenticeship or traineeship, you build a professional network of connections that can assist you after you complete your qualification.

Launch your career as an apprentice or trainee

Completing an apprenticeship or traineeship can give you a big advantage in the workforce, especially when you’re fresh out of school.

You’re able to get hands-on industry experience, earn while you learn and essentially try before you buy. And upon successful completion – you will have a nationally recognised qualification.

Now that you know the benefits of becoming an apprentice or trainee, it’s time to find a pathway that you’re interested in.
