Youth Week in Mount Barker District Council

In celebration of Youth Week 2026, Mount Barker District Council came together with HITsa to offer a school holiday barista course for young people in the community. The nine participants were a delight to have on campus for the 3-day course.

The culmination of the program was our “pop up cafe”, with participants taking coffee orders, making and serving coffee to invited guests from MT Barker District Council and elected members, as well as representatives from local job service providers who spoke to students about employment opportunities using their new skills

Feedback from students included:
"Learning many different aspects of hospitality such as food safety and customer service as well as specific skills to be a barista and improving in my coffee making skills. Would definitely recommend HITsa training to others interested in learning new skills to take into the workforce."

"Ross was really knowledgeable and explained everything very well. Would definitely recommend this program to other people, especially at the subsidised rate which made it much for affordable and assessable to everyone, especially students who done earn very much"

"Very insightful and lots of time to practice making coffees! I would definitely recommend this to others."

Cafe Skills Program Wrap-Up

HITSA, Mount Gambier recently delivered its Cafe Skills Training Program at Elementary by Soul, giving participants valuable hands-on experience in a premium restaurant environment.

Throughout the program, students built practical skills in food preparation, kitchen operations and customer service, working closely with Chef Kirby and growing in confidence each day.

The program concluded with a set lunch service, where participants prepared and served a beautifully presented menu to invited providers, including dishes such as potato and leek soup, fresh pesto pasta, barramundi with hand-cut chips, and a classic apple fritter dessert.

The lunch was a fantastic success, highlighting the teamwork, confidence and high-quality skills developed across the program.

Student’s Experience with Individual Support

Hope P successfully completed her CHC33021 Certificate in Individual Support (Disability) in April 2026.

"I have nothing but good things to say about HITsa. My personal circumstances have been quite challenging, and I would not have been able to complete the course without your support. I truly appreciate your guidance, patience, and assistance along the way.

Karen, I especially appreciate how you have been making ways to accommodate my (and other students') requests in a prompt, timely, helpful, and inclusive manner. I honestly do not know how you do it.

Fleur, special mention also goes to you for your knowledgeable, thorough, and sensible approach, as well as your guidance and assistance, which helped me complete the RIS and RPL processes in a prompt and efficient manner.

I would also like to express my appreciation to the trainers, with special mention to Jaslin, for the support and knowledge shared throughout the course.

In addition, HITsa's constant drive to look for ways to improve and make things better for your students and our future is truly commendable.

More power to you all and the rest of the HITsa team. Your work truly makes a difference."

Cyber Safety: Online Harassment & Bullying

Online harassment and cyberbullying can have serious impacts on mental health, learning, and even future employment. It can happen to anyone, at any time, and often extends beyond the classroom. That’s why creating a safe and respectful digital space is a shared responsibility.

What Does Online Harassment Look Like?

Online harassment can take many forms, including:

  • Abusive or threatening messages

  • Spreading rumours or sharing private content

  • Excluding others from online groups

  • Repeated negative behaviour through social media or messaging

How Can Students Stay Safe Online?

  • As students, you can take simple steps to protect yourself and others:

  • Protect your personal information and privacy – Be mindful of what you share online.

  • Think before you post or share – Consider how your words or actions might affect others.

  • Don’t engage – Block and report harmful behaviour instead of responding.

  • Speak up – Reach out to a trainer or wellbeing staff member for support.

How Can Staff Help?

As staff members of a VET Training and Employment Centre, you play a crucial role in fostering a safe online environment. Here’s how you can help:

  • Set clear expectations – Promote respectful online behaviour from the start.

  • Act early – Take all concerns seriously and address them promptly.

  • Provide clear reporting pathways – Make it easy for students to report issues.

  • Model positive behaviour – Demonstrate respectful and constructive digital communication.

  • Refer students to support services – Guide them to resources that can help.

Support and Resources

If you or someone you know needs help, these resources are available:

The Key Message that everyone can take from this is, stay safe, speak up, and support each other online.
